Coming Attraction: Green Flash-Founders Linchpin White IPA

When Green Flash Brewing Company moved into their new digs in Mira Mesa, there was no doubt theirs would become a beery gathering place. The large, well-stocked tasting room alone guaranteed that. Of late, however, it’s the brewery that’s been packing them in.

In March, Green Flash brewmaster Chuck Silva crafted a dark saison (Belgian-style farmhouse ale) with friend and fellow brewer Alexis Briol from Belgium’s St. Feuillien. Less than a month later, he’s already at work on another collaboration brew, this time with Jeremy Kosmicki from Grand Rapids, Michigan’s Founders Brewing Company.

The beer—an IPA brewed with a pair of American and Belgian yeast strains, wheat malt and, as one would expect from Silva, plenty of hop varieties common to his line of West-Coast-and-proud-of-it ales—will go by the name Linchpin White IPA. It will be offered in limited release and make a strategic debut the first week of May when the Brewers Association’s Craft Brewers Conference and global World Beer Cup competitions take place in America’s Finest City.

Green Flash will tap the first keg at their tasting room at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, May 1. It will also be available, along with the chance to meet the conspirators responsible for it, at Hamilton’s Tavern and the Regal Beagle beginning 5 p.m. on Friday, May 4. After that, it will be available in bottles and on draft at select accounts.

Founders isn’t a popular brand in local beer circles as they do not distribute to San Diego, but they are very well established and enjoy a solid following among American craft beer enthusiasts. One of the greatest aspects of collaboration beers is the opportunity to taste the virtues of recipes and brewing styles from foreign craftspeople.

Until now, my only taste of Founders beer has come at the annual Great American Beer Festival, and even that required a plane ride to Denver. It’ll be nice to save some coin and get a taste in my own backyard.
