San Diego Beer Week: Day Two

With hundreds of events (448 at the time of this writing) from pint nights to festivals and all-out, multi-venue fermentable free-for-alls, San Diego Beer Week can be confusing…and that’s before you start drinking. Fortunately, I know a thing or two about craft beer and our local scene. As such, I’ll be doling out daily info on some of the most special and significant goings-on during this ten-day span. Feel something incredible is missing? Comment and help get the word out there. No matter what you do, have a great time and some great beers!

DAY TWO | Saturday, November 5

10 a.m. – Small Bar Beer for Breakfast To heck with Miller time. Enjoy Malheur time…as in Belgium’s regaled Malheur brewery. Hit this University Heights beerophile haunt and enjoy Malheur 10, 12, Brut, and Dark with Monte Cristo sandwiches featuring sugar-cured bacon and Swiss between sourdough French toast. Details

11 a.m. – San Diego Brewers Guild Festival Venture to Liberty Station for the only beer festival devoted exclusively to San Diego-based craft breweries. This year, the San Diego Brewers Guild has teamed with local radio station FM 94/9 to add live music from Mathew Sweet, Telekenesis, and Stone Foxes to the beery equation. Details

11 a.m. – Bitter Saturday No beer style is more readily and fittingly associated with San Diego as India pale ales. Better known as IPAs, they deliver all the heavy grapefruit, pine, and tropical-fruit flavors and tongue-scrubbing bitterness hopheads love. Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens is tapping 20 of them. Pace yourself! Details

5 p.m. – Green Flash Dueling Cask Pint Night Green Flash produces a wide variety of beer styles, all of which are instantly identifiable for their cleanliness of flavor and clear hop profiles. Experience that simultaneous display of consistency and variance at San Marcos’ Churchill’s Pub when they tap dual casks plus vintage beers. Details

8 p.m. – Assembly: A Jolly Pumpkin Pairing Dinner No brewery creates more off-the-wall-flavored sour beers than Michigan’s Jolly Pumpkin. It takes a brave soul to create a pairing dinner centered exclusively around such oddities — especially one that’s vegan — but Sea Rocket Bistro chef Chad White’s up to the challenge. Details
