Landini's Secret Garden

Talking of great patios...

“Best-kept secret in town,” says John.

He and his buddy Derek are munching pizza and slurping Stone at an elevated wooden deck in someone's back garden that looks out over Little Italy towards the harbor.

John and Derek

It’s sunset. Colors are spectacular. Little wall fountain gurgles away happily.

Oh man. Chill time.

This is all happening behind the chocolate building with the great mural of the fishing boat “Amerigo” on the side wall, by Grant Pecoff. You must have seen it. Pecoff’s studio is upstairs.

Downstairs is Landini’s Pizzeria (1827 India, Little Italy, between Date and Fir, 619-238-3502), all red with the Italian flag behind the name.

There's also umbrella sidewalk seating in front of Landini's

“Just the best pizza place in town,” says John. “It’s like Bronx Pizza without the attitude.”

They’re eating slices of marinara (with ricotta and herby sausage), and an “everything” pizza with jalapeños, ricotta, pepperoni, plus a pitcher of Stone IPA.

That pitcher cost $15.75. “But they have a deal of $8.50 for two slices of pizza and a beer – good craft beer, too,” says Derek, "not just your Bud Light."

I check downstairs with Sean, who’s sliding a BBQ chicken pizza into the display cabinet.

Costs $18 for the 18-inch pie. Slices are $3, with a daily special of two slices and a soda for $6. Or one slice and a salad and a soda for $6.50.

The BBQ chicken-and-onion pizza pie

This was Friday evening. But today I'm thinking: this would be so great for lunch with your lover.

I hit the cell phone.

“Hey hey! Carla?…”
