Sunset Cliffs? Go at Sunrise!

Wow. Nothing so wake-you-up as a good stiff breeze coming up over Sunset Cliffs at sunrise.

Or, shall we say, shockingly early, for me...like, eight o’clock.

Plus, armadas of pelicans slo-mo cruising along the clifftop airlift and the waves crashing on the rocks below the sign “Danger: Sheer Unstable Cliffs. Stay Back.”

If I were a surfer, I’d be scared stiff to go where they ride around here.

Much better to retreat 50 yards to the curbside tables of the Point Loma Beach Café (1424 Sunset Cliffs Boulevard (near corner with Point Loma Avenue), 619-758-1776) for a breakfast (it opens at eight).

Say, a Sunrise Burrito, with eggs, carne asada, potato, black beans, cheese, and chipotle sauce ($6.49), or the O.B.: “grilled chicken, sautéed onion, black beans, rice, avocado, Monterey jack cheese, and creamy jalapeño sauce,” $6.99.

Or the one I had, the scrumbo scramble they call “The Breakfast Skillet,” which has home-style spuds, bell pepper, onion, mushroom, bacon, ham, two eggs, pepper jack cheese, and toast or tortilla, for $6.99.

There’s something about that salt air and the feeling of being on the edge of the wild world because, I swear, the brekkie disappears before you can say Jack Robinson.

’Course, no need to rush off, long as the coffee refills keep coming…

(How to get there? It’s at the end of the #35 bus route.)
