On a (Cinnamon) Roll

John Kennedy hands me an apple-loaded cinnamon roll and a cawfee. "We're the only dedicated cinnamon roll place in town that I know of," he says.

Me too. Got drawn in here by the nose. Because there's nothing like the smell of cinnamon in the mawnin'. Specially a cinnamon roll with apple in it.

Awesome apple cinnamon roll with coffee, $5.50 (including tax)

I just happened by this new-looking place on Market (Homie's Cinnamon Rolls, 1021 Market Street, 619-269-6121) on my way to the Starbucks next door on the corner of Tenth.

Actually, it has been open about a year. John says Harold "Butch" Rose started it up after years cooking in the Navy and for American Hawaii Cruises and then becoming a DJ at Channel 933 radio. The place is strewn with photos of Butch with famous people. Like the one with Celine Dion wrapping her arms around him.

The basic cinnamon roll costs $2.99. The apple-loaded one's $3.69.

Kennedy say he makes the dough and bakes the rolls every morning right here

They also do breakfasts such as eggs and sausage for six, seven bucks.

The lunch one I want to try is Homie's Cinnaburger, a burger in a cinnamon roll ($7.99). That sweet-savory thing might just work.

And about the Kennedy connection? Because he does have that fresh-faced Irish look, just like JFK in early photos...

No such luck.

"Just another Kennedy," he says.
