San Diego Beer Culture Encourages "Sketchy" Behavior

As a beer writer, I’ve always been a fan of ales and the arts. So, when I heard about a pair of art contest tied into the local brewing subculture, I was all in. Not having set a pen or pencil tip to paper with the intent of capturing an artistic scene since the days I was drawing up Crayola tributes to my buddies The Smurfs, I do not intend to take part, but wanted to do my part in making sure folks with real talent and an affinity for SD craft suds had the chance to enter their creations for consideration.

The first contest is centered around San Diego Beer Week, the county’s 10-day celebration of our status as the craft brewing capital of the US. From now through August 4, the artistically-inclined can submit designs for the perfect San Diego Beer Week t-shirt. The winner will not only have their shirt go up for sale on the Beer Week website (http://sdbw.org), but also receive two free tickets to the opening and closing capstone events of the 10-day ferment-for-all – the San Diego Brewers Guild Festival and the Beer Garden food-and-beer-pairing events at The Lodge at Torrey Pines. For contest guidelines, check out http://tinyurl.com/3gjanuw.

TailGate Beer Company is also looking for help visually expressing itself. The cans-only operation is looking for San Diegans to design a point of sale display to be posted where the beer is sold and consumed (think bars and pubs). TailGate’s aim is to be a staple for sports fans (hence the company’s name) all over the country, so the winning entry could potentially get a lot of traction…and $500. A list of rules is available at TailGate’s website, http://tailgatebeer.com and entries can be dropped off at The Ruby Room (1271 University Avenue) between August 8 and 24, when the winner will be announced at a special evening event.
