Left Without Light; CFE Eliminates "Diablitos" (Uniradio Informa, 1/12/13)

TIJUANA, BC – Since 20 days ago, families in colonia Rios Alta and nearby - about 50 in total, have been without power. Staff of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) disconnected the so-called "diablitos (power thieves)" after a special surveillance system disclosed to the federal Public Ministry those in the neighborhood who tried to reconnect again.

Now they are asking for help by appealing to the humanity of the officials because they claim they are trying to care for their children and the sick, explained a woman, Guadalupe Leyva, who has lived in this area for fifteen years.

Don Pedro Medina in colonia Alfonso Garzón needs to keep his medicine in the refrigerator, "I am ill with diabetes. I need my stuff in the fridge, everything I have is lost; they cut my lights 20 days ago. I paid for my contract month and a half ago; they demanded so. I spent 3,000 pesos ($237 US), but they have not put it back on."

Eduardo Valenzuela said there were contracts and electrification16 years ago, but it only lasted for three years of service, “They came and removed the posts down here at the ground and never wanted to put in light for us".

There are estimates of approximately 500 families affected in several colonies, as is José Carmen Jiménez, in the colonia Rios neighborhood. "The people who live here are not animals; they are people, we are Mexican; what happens is that they come in and campaign as candidates and promise us water, electricity, drainage. We have never met them, and always vote for this or that candidate. We are adults and children who need power", he said.
