Ersatz News Source: SDPD Trades-In Vehicles; Hotel Del Sold in Tax Lien Auction

SDPD Trades-In Ford Sedans for Fiat Subcompacts (10/27/12)

In a press release, SDPD announced the pending transition from Ford Crown Victorias patrol cruisers to Fiat Cinquecentos. A reason given is the gas-guzzling Ford sedans only obtain an estimated 12 MPG, while the Fiats deliver around 36 MPG - three times the efficiency, reports the fleet manager. “Sure, there will be less capacity for prisoner transport, so we will just have to issue tickets instead. We need to save fuel and the jails are full anyway. This kills two birds with one stone.” Another reported advantage of the smaller Fiats is they can be better used in stealth operations because of their much smaller size. They will work better for speed trap and surveillance work. For example, they are easily hidden behind a dumpster. The department expects to have about 400 of the new black and white Fiats on the job by January 2013. In the future, Vespa scooters will also replace most of the current Kawasaki 1000 traffic motorcycles.

Hotel Del Sold in a Tax Lien Auction (10/27/12)

Friday morning, on the county courthouse steps, the iconic Hotel Del in Coronado was sold in a tax lien. The hotel owners had not paid taxes for several years reportedly due to slow tourism in the area. The winning bidder was the Motel 6 Corporation for $312.5 million. In an immediate announcement made regarding the facility’s future, a statement read in part: “Travelers can expect low $49 regular rates and $29 holiday weekend specials. Several food courts will include such favorites as Mc Donald’s, KFC, Crispy Crème, and 49 Flavors. Two new water parks are also planned for immediate construction on the site.” Coronado City Council members were thrilled upon hearing the news.
