Baja & Border News Translations: Child Dies Due to Ricketts; Poets Meet at Binational Event

Child Dies Due to Ricketts (La Cronica, 10/20/12)

MEXICALI, BC - After 10 days of intensive treatment against Ricketts a child of 3 years died at the General Hospital. The Chief of Pediatrics Service at the hospital, Francisco Javier Manzo Suárez, explained that this is a severe problem and according to medical literature contracting the disease happens to one in ten children.

The child, whose name was not released, died early Monday. The smaller the child is the more serious is the problem. If the child is between 5 and 9 years old, they can usually survive, but he was very small, said Manzo Suárez.

When the child arrived at the hospital he already had the condition more than five days, he added, when we usually begin to pay more attention on the third day, and if the treatment is given early we are more likely to save them. "When he arrived he had already become cloudy with skin lesions that had already affected his brain. Everything was very quick even when he was given treatment," explained the Chief of service of pediatrics.

For that reason the disease evolves into an infection that spreads throughout the body. It then initiates its phase of coagulation, he said, and blood in important parts are unable to irrigate the heart, kidneys and the brain. Unfortunately, it all leads to a fatal situation. http://www.lacronica.com/EdicionEnLinea/Notas/Noticias/20102012/632077.aspx

Poets Meet at Binational Event (La Cronica, 10/20/12 by Gina Rodríguez)

San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora - Poets from Mexico and United States opened the 5th meeting of migrant poets on Friday morning, where in addition to showing their creations, they maintained their 'identity'. The first poet to present his work was Maestro Juan Bañuelos, Professor of the University of Tlaxcala who explained that his poetic work is confined to where he was born in Chiapas, surrounded by indigenous tribes.

"Talk of migrant poets is an excellent pretext to discuss problems of the border," said Ignacio Mondaca, at the Sonoran Institute of Culture (SLCR) during the opening ceremony. Ignacio Mondaca noted that defending and disseminating the poetry also defends our identity. http://www.lacronica.com/EdicionEnLinea/Notas/Noticias/19102012/632030.aspx
