Baja & Border News Translations: Alcohol Sales Permits are Backlogged; Not Enough Mass Transit Vehicles

Alcohol Sales Permits are Backlogged (Tijuana Press, 10/19/12 by Daniel Angel)

Tijuana, BC - The Alcohol Commission continues to process dozens of permits for alcohol sales that are waiting for a response or have demanded it through the courts. This Friday, the Commission met and announced they worked on 37 requests received by the municipal administration of which, most were already operating with a temporary permit.

Members of the Commission said, the future approval of requests for large retail chains by Town Hall are almost a fact already. They explained that in addition to the awaiting requests, they would put six cases on the table where the petitioners sought the courts assistance so that City Hall may respond to the requests.

Before the start of the working meeting in the Aldermen room, the councilmen commented they are not finished with the review process and would remain at work to respond to the cases that are disputed. According to a press release sent by the City Council on the work of the Commission, the aldermen approved the first 37 records, without making mention of the six requests where a judge instructed the Council to respond to the citizens.

According to official information from the Government, there are about 120 requests waiting where about 50 applicants have provisional permits of 90 days that in some cases have already expired and may not be recertified. The approval of 37 permits, the official press release says, represents an income of around 15 million pesos ($1.2 million US) for the City Government. http://www.tijuanapress.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=7933:aprueba-comision-37-permisos-para-venta-de-alcohol&catid=1:locales&Itemid=50

Not Enough Mass Transit Vehicles (Tijuana Press, 10/18/12 by Daniel Angel)

Tijuana, BC - The Municipal Department of Transportation estimated that this year there will be 700 new mass transportation units circulating in the city and it will not reach the expected goal. The last delivery of new mass transport units was March 21, with 16 trucks for the Azul y Blanco Company.

On this occasion, transport director Bernardo Sanchez commented, the company received 24 units in February and they still have "some ordered". "The mass transit vehicles in Tijuana number about 3,200 units. We had hoped that we would have another thousand units this year, but is not going to happen", he said.

He explained that companies are obtaining credit to buy new trucks, and the problem is that the larger companies, like Calfia y Verde y Crema, still have older vehicles. Calfia, to date, has not presented a renewal to operate their trucks. http://www.tijuanapress.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=7936:no-se-cumplira-meta-de-camiones-nuevos&catid=1:locales&Itemid=50
