Industry Complains about Crossing Waits and Delays (Uniradio Informa, 11/5/12)

TIJUANA, BC - Mexico and United States customs are generating delays in cargo crossings is a growing complaint of maquiladora companies executives, including at the new El Chaparral port of entry. Complaints are also up in pedestrian crossings, said Gabriel Merino, President of the Association of Industries of Mesa Otay (AIMO).

At the first crossing point, he explained from the United States to Tijuana is where three to four hour wait times are generated. Carriers have declared they are affected and ensured there are also increased times if there is an alert with regard to any of their merchandise.

"The United States Customs has no schedules and suddenly when they begin to make inspections, reviewing further where there is a need, they declare a “situation amber”, a call they are suspicious and begin to more carefully review. That creates delays on the line from here to there," he explained. The crossing to United States at Otay is also complicated by the same situation and waiting times.

"On the roads on which all vehicles cross, we have problems where enterprises are beginning to complain about the obstructions at its platforms. We are talking about 12th Street, where all the people cross through customs. We are waiting to confirm the issue at international Avenue with the Governor. The Government should open a project to cross at the entrance to Tecate, which would not have to pass industrial Boulevard", he said.

He also added, "I differ with the President of Coparmex, Jorge Escalante who declares that all is good and quiet, when things are really not good. There is still impressive work needed to the infrastructure; it really generated a funnel. What is needed to expedite border crossing is a facility not only for industry, but for executives who work in Tijuana who cross there as not all have sentry passes". He stated that this situation affects the economic development of Tijuana. http://www.uniradioinforma.com/noticias/tijuana/articulo156868.html
