Free movies: Anaglyph 3D edition

Let's close the week with a handful of 3D oddities from the copyright snubbing folks at YouTube. All of the clips are presented in the anaglyph (red & blue) 3D. If you didn't get 3D specs when you purchased The Three Stooges Collection, Vol. 7: 1952-1954, look underneath your laptop or keypad for a pair of glasses.

If you think thing watching a film through cardboard glasses was rough on the bridge of your nose, wait until you get a gander at the headache-inducing effects of anaglyph 3D when viewed on a computer monitor. Oh, boy, kids, that's scary stuff.

This first Stooge short, Pardon My Backfire, appeared to have been uploaded by the Ray Charles Foundation. You'll fare a bit better -- and find out what happens if you like asparagus -- by watching Spooks.

Back in the day I taught a class on 3D and was fortunate enough to find a 16mm anaglyph print of William Cameron Menzies' The Maze to screen for my students. For those not familiar with the name, William Cameron Menzies invented the job of production designer and went on to give films like The Thief of Baghdad (1924), Reign of Terror, The Pride of the Yankees, and Gone With the Wind their distinctive look.

It's been sometime since I've seen The Maze, and while I remember the print having some registration problems, the image of a giant frog-man hopping through a giant 3D maze still burns bright.

The folks at Universal must have taken down the 3D copy of Creature from the Black Lagoon. Instead of rotenone floating before our eyes, we'll have to make due with giant meteors exploding in Jack Arnold's It Came from Outer Space.

Finally, take off the glasses and see 3D like you have never seen it before in Dr. Tongue's 3D House of Slave Chicks!
