San Diego Film Critics Society Welcomes Three New Members

Anders Wright, president of The San Diego Film Critics Society, announced this week that three new members have been added to the roster.

Danny Baldwin, Josh Board, and Glenn Heath Jr. all made the cut, raising the current membership to seventeen dextrous scribes, each blessed with the ability to takes notes in the dark and endowed with God's greatest gift of all: the power to get into movies for free.

Those of you blessed to be my one of my thousands of "friends" on Facebook (97% of whom are dead celebrities) have hopefully been amused by the lively banter Josh Board and I engage in on a near daily. Josh is a former writer (and eternal party crasher) for the Reader whose work can currently be seen and/or heard on SanDiego.com, KOGO, and Fox 5 San Diego. The latter gig affords him the enviable task of sharing the back seat of a convertible with Heather Ford. Who needs movies?

Glenn Heath, Jr. writes for Slant Magazine, The House Next Door, SanDiego.com, and Not Coming to a Theater Near You. Glenn is not one of those critics (and you know who you are) who only show up for screenings of major studio releases. (Why bother with messy subtitles when it's so much more fun to wipe the drool from your chin after being sucker-punched by Zack Snyder?) I've spent many a morning screening at Hillcrest in Glenn's company and was delighted to learn that instead of popping in the DVD screener the day it arrived, he waited until La Quatro Volte opened to see it in 35mm. Welcome aboard, pal!

Oddly enough, of the three inductees, the gentleman that I'm least familiar is the one I sponsored. 22-year-old Danny Baldwin had been writing criticism for years before I caught up with him a few months back. The first day we met, the former AMC projectionist took the time to bring me up to speed on the art of digital projection. When it came time to vote, my defense was uncharacteristically short: "Danny is a terrific writer who, in one hour, taught me things that I don't know about movies."

It was a landslide!

Welcome one and all. Be sure to stock up on spit-guards and ear-plugs. Those year-end awards votes tend to get pretty ugly.

Watch The Big Screen for an upcoming announcement concerning the SDFCS Critics Pick Series (all films in 35mm), coming soon to Reading Cinemas Gaslamp 15. In the meantime, take a moment to acquaint yourself with our members.
