NOISE

One more comment about ILLEGAL aliens: In Maryland:

"The Maryland General Assembly last night passed a hard-fought compromise that would end the practice of issuing driver's licenses to illegal immigrants".

This should be the norm in every single state in the union. And one other thing, a message to California Lifeline: CHANGE YOUR TELEPHONE MESSAGE. I should not have to 'press' anything for English. You can press numbers for bunches of other languages. But this is the USA, we speak ENGLISH. Thanks.

On Friday, April 17, I plan to wander around the gaslamp area, my main purpose being to listen to the music. It would be great if some downtown residents could join me. If there is anyone living near the rooftop bars and gets rocked & rolled by loud music, please let me know.

If you are directly affected by the music or just want to experience what may be an interesting night out, please join the Friday night walk. If you have had problems with loud music emanating from a commercial venue or just want to add your 2 cents worth, send me an e-mail relating your experience.

I am starting with the premise that our city is far too noisy. It is something that has bothered me for quite some time as my apartment faces directly west & there are no obstructions, 'cept one palm tree. The Ivy Hotel was the first culprit. I decided to tackle it on my own as the bureaucracy would take forever.

At first, I just called them EVERY Friday & Saturday night. They worked with me, even sending people over to my apartment to listen. They removed east facing speakers and the problem was almost alleviated. A few glitches, but impressive response for a fancy corporate hotel.

For the other rooftop bar noise, we will have to rely on reports from their neighbors. So ALL who live in the vicinity of Stingaree, J Bar, Altitude, please rate your experiences and send them in an e-mail to me. It is my opinion that there was a failure to think, on behalf of the CCDC, City Council, Police, etc. To attract people to fill the hundreds of condos now available, noise is not the way to go.

I hope some of you can join me. If not, please read my report and submit your comments, either via the Reader or directly to me: [email protected].

SATURDAY, APRIL 18, 2009 10:30 PM I will be at the parking lot at the south west corner of 7th and E.

I will then traverse the Gaslamp area. I want to talk to as many people as possible, but especially those who live downtown. This is a big Quality of Life issue. I have a hand held decibel meter which will give us an idea as to the noise emanating from several locations. I believe that some of the noisier places have open windows & doors. It may be a quick solution to close those.

I just find it ironic that the buildings continue to be built. I asked the Realtors' Association if they advise potential buyers about being subjected to loud music 2-3 nights a week. The answer I got was taken directly from the 'how to talk politics' manual. That translates to a big fat NO. I believe the noise factor is big enough that it be considered a requirement in open disclosure for real estate buyers.

So, we have NOISE on Thursday, Friday & Saturday nights, which comes out to 156 nights per year & that does not include any of the special events. For the rents being charged, the condo prices, even the hotel prices, we certainly should not have to be assaulted with noise and the potential for hearing loss which can result from repeated exposure to airport noise, traffic, construction (ongoing for 10+ years in 92101), loud music, barking dogs. When you have all of these factors it is not only unpleasant, but dangerous to your health.

SO, COME ON DOWN, join me in my efforts to make downtown the perfect place to live as I think it once was not too long ago. I have lived downtown since 1998.

I hope to see many of you on Friday night, and hear from others via e-mail.

So long
