Congressman makes marriage proposal

As the nation waits for the Supreme Court's ruling on the constitutionality of Proposition 8, the California ballot initiative that outlawed gay marriage in this state, San Diego Congressmanly Huncan Dunter has called for another ballot initiative, this one also aimed at protecting marriage.

"On June 22," said Dunter at a press conference this morning, "Escondido resident Abdul Ibrahim turned himself in to police and told them he had stabbed his wife to death. On June 21, La Mesa resident Clyde Jay Hayen allegedly shot his wife of 54 years after she served him with divorce papers. Earlier this year, Alpine resident Justin Meltzer was sentenced to 40 years in prison for shooting his wife, whom he was divorcing. Also, San Diego resident Joseph Gotell was convicted for shooting his estranged wife. There are many threats to the institution of marriage, and all must be vigilantly guarded against. But clearly, the greatest threat facing marriage today is married people. That's why I'm introducing Proposition 9, which will make it a crime to kill your spouse. Let's get this on the ballot people. Let's protect marriage!"

Early polls, however, show only 30% of Californians would support such a measure, with the rate dropping to 14% among married people.
