Former mayor Golding calls former mayor O'Connor's gambling losses "piddling"

"Betting with funds from her husband's nonprofit? That's almost like betting with your own money! It's a sucker's game!"

This morning, former San Diego mayor Susan Golding addressed a gathering of the Rancho Santa Fe Wealthy Women's Society at a caviar tasting. She took the occasion to offer comment on the news that former San Diego Mayor Maureen O'Connor had recently acknowledged misappropriating millions of dollars from her deceased husband's charitable foundation, and had agreed to repay the foundation more than $2 million and to seek treatment for her gambling addiction.

"Poor Maureen," began Golding. "Public humiliation, and for what? A couple million? That's what she gets for playing small ball. She didn't even have the sense to use public funds, the way I did when I started playing the stock market with all those millions from the city's pension funds. That's where the real action is. God, when we hit, we hit big. There is nothing in the world that can top that feeling - not good governance, not keeping the Chargers in San Diego through ticket guarantees - not even ditching your money-laundering husband. And when we lost - well, it wasn't our money to begin with, so no big whoop."
