Manchester: "The New York Times thinks the U-T is awesome."

Owner of Local Daily "Couldn't Be Happier" Over Media Column in Paper of Record

"[Reader writer Don] Bauder has slipped a cog. Either that, or he can't read."

PUTTING THE 'OW' BACK IN 'YELLOW JOURNALISM,' MISSION VALLEY - "Don Bauder?" asks U-T owner Papa Doug Manchester, cocking a quizzical eyebrow. "Ah, yes - I remember him. Used to write for the daily paper in San Diego - the one I currently own. Shuffled off when he couldn't hack it any more, and now he spews his bitterness all over the pages of the weekly rag."

Manchester is mentioning Bauder because Bauder recently wrote a piece for this paper entitled "NYT Columnist Slams U-T Ownership." The piece examined an article about the U-T by New York Times media columnist David Carr, and claimed, among other things, that Carr "precisely pinpoints what is wrong with the Union-Tribune's current ownership and management."

"Bauder is blinded by his own frustration," chuckled Manchester. "Even in the quote he cites from the Times, Carr says that the 'future appears to have arrived in San Diego.' He must not see many car ads. Generally, saying 'The future has arrived' is a pretty positive thing."

And there's more. "That fellow from Voice of San Diego said that 'The U-T is an important institution in this city and you want to see it succeed.' Voice of San Diego! Carr was also kind enough to note that 'Mr. Lynch says the only agenda he and Mr. Manchester have is making San Diego a better place.' And finally, Carr says that we have 'the brawn and ubiquity of a daily newspaper,' and calls us 'the only game in town.' Where I come from, being the only game in town is a pretty good thing."

"Hey Don," concluded Manchester, "[fired sports columnist Tim] Sullivan is in talks to get his old job back. Maybe you should apply, too."
