RE: CHANGE FOR THE FUTURE

http://sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2012/apr/26/23530/

DATE: APRIL 24, 2012

We have great expectations and ambitions of transforming the U-T into a multi-platform media organization. Many of you have seen the changes throughout the building with the exciting addition of the television studio and, soon-to-launch, UTTV.

These endeavors have caused some to comment and question what such changes mean to the future of the newspaper. We believe that entering into new markets and attracting different audiences are critical ingredients to ensure success and longevity into the future; it is imperative that we change in order to thrive.

Making changes and attracting new audiences will allow us to re-invest in the newspaper and transition the U-T into a source of news, information, and entertainment that will be welcomed by San Diegans for years to come.

However, with change, comes change… Some of the changes that you will see and experience going forward are:

  • There will be different content standards on different media platforms

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRhGCEIB-4Y

  • We will be covering the full lifestyles of San Diego, branching into areas that have not traditionally been part of the UT, such as DSD and the new morning show, which will push many of us beyond our traditional comfort zones. These are important parts of the current and perpetually changing media scene, and we intend to be a part of them.

  • Skill Sets – As the company changes, the skill sets of those associated with producing content will also change.

http://sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2012/apr/26/23534/

  • As we branch into new areas, we will be hiring individuals based on different criteria than we did in the past for traditional print journalists (e.g. the anchor for UTTV needs to be charismatic and telegenic as well as experienced and academically qualified).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATUtAIOn_6E

  • Content producers need to be proficient in and produce in a multiplatform environment.

  • Training – This week we are launching training for existing newsroom employees; going forward, performance criteria will look different than they do today, based on the different areas of media.

Most Importantly….What’s Not changing

Our business model, our culture, and our content all are changing, but our expectations for the comportment of our employees, are not. We are always courteous and open-minded, accommodating with our customers, and respectful and professional with one another. We strive to set an example as a great workplace that challenges all employees to fulfill their highest potential.

Our hope is that everyone will come onboard, embrace the changes of the new landscape, and be a part of our future. We depend on you!
