Shaft
The poor mediocre review by the SD Reader and poor reviews by other sources including Rotten Tomato’s and Ebert are wrong! I think this only proves that there are a bunch of uptight people that find themselves as reviewers; the same people that call garages parking structures. The racially mixed audience that viewed this funny movie with me were laughing their butts off! You be the judge.— June 26, 2019 6:07 p.m.
A Star is Born
I posted a less rude but similar comment, panning the reviewer’s viewpoint and helpfulness. My comment never appeared. Maybe ML is also the gatekeeper for comments. Who knows?— October 18, 2018 2:39 p.m.
Cries and Whispers (Viskningar och rop)
Not Bergman’s best, but a worthwhile film. Duncan’s review missed the mark (not an unusual occurrence).— July 10, 2018 6:56 p.m.
Cutie and the Boxer
This is a "must see"! I had the good fortune to see this wacky and heartwarming documentary at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. When the two artists were interviewed, Ushio was asked if there was anything unexpected or surprising when he saw the film. He said, "I gave up all my privacy. The camera men were with us almost every day for five years. I thought the film was supposed to be about my art, but it turned out to be sort of a love story". And that it did! I will be at the Ken to see it again.— August 21, 2013 7:43 p.m.
Skyfall
I enjoyed Skyfall a lot more than the reviewer. There was more character development in two major characters, 007 and M. One of the better Bond flicks.— November 11, 2012 8:53 p.m.
Moonrise Kingdom
I categorically disagree with the review submitted by Ursula. In support of my opinion that this is a virtually perfect little movie is the fact that it has remained in theatres for several months and made a bunch of money. I have paid full price to see it twice and have received words of thanks from more than a dozen friends that saw it on my recommendation and were delighted. It is a charming period piece fantasy that compares favorably to 'Cinema Paradiso', one of my other all-time favorite movies. While visiting Tucson recently, I began to tell a friend that rarely goes to movie theatres about this film. During my prologue he interrupted me by saying, "Do you mean 'Moonrise Kingdom'? I have taken my girlfriend to see it three times in the past two weeks." This film may not be for everyone, but it truly deserves its 4 star rating.— October 7, 2012 7:44 a.m.
David Elliott's Final Column
I like what you have accomplished. I will miss your reviews. I have sensed a balanced and down-to-earth perspective. I wish happiness and good fortune to you and the many other talented people in journalism and criticism that have suffered as the digital information age evolves, good friends included. Finally, I don't usually say negative things in print, but I feel compelled to take this opportunity to say that I was happy when you "replaced" Duncan S. He was predictably pompous and was rarely of use to me as as a reviewer. My only positive words for him are that his movie reviews were better than his music reviews.— June 15, 2012 11:57 a.m.
