Have all San Diego mayors been weasels?
An crucial distinction that's easily overlooked. Thank you and well put!— December 11, 2012 8:09 p.m.
America's Finest Mural
Would that I had the column inches to blather on a bit about the "culture war" of the early nineties, the rise of PC, and the politically tricky complications of third-wave feminism and multiculturalism, among other things! There are graduate seminars devoted to the subject for good reasons. Let's suffice to say that I merely wanted to evoke the political and academic climate of late-80's and early-90's leftist America as a way to frame up the genesis of this mural in the culture of the time. As for the reasons behind the mural, I can't fault KK her own explanation! I think there was a mixture of irony involved in the beginning, but that was always tempered by a degree of optimism on the part of the artist. There was hope that SD would grow into the moniker and I don't think that the artist would have lifted a brush without a little faith in the message.— December 7, 2012 3:19 p.m.
Have all San Diego mayors been weasels?
Au contraire, monaghan! I find if telling that so little changes despite the passage of more than a century. If we look back 10, 15, 50, 100 years, the dynamic of political tension for the sake of tension seems intact until the very genesis of the city. Even the first mayor ever governed from afar, which might have been considered a weasely move in its own right. Plus, if you read the other question from this week's column there's somewhat of a commentary on SD's hundred-year-old mission to become a tourist mecca. The two factoids complement each other nicely. Regard, if you must, our most recent mayor. By some accounts, he's not the most effectual politician to hold public office, yet his detractors are many and vocal. Why is that? Because the holding of office makes more enemies than friends. He'll probably wield more influence in the Chamber of Commerce, but it's likely that all the thunder will come down on the new mayor. Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown....— December 6, 2012 6:37 p.m.
Topless males vs. topless females
Private property is another matter entirely. If someone's paying taxes on the land, you can let it all hang out!— November 21, 2012 6:21 p.m.
Calculating Attendance at the I.B. Sandcastle Festival
Oh, I've heard the news for sure. Believe it or not, this last question had been floating around in the Alice Archives since the last sandcastle festival. There's a group that wants to bring back the festival, but they face some stiff opposition based on the fact that it's apparently a major headache to fit that many people into IB over the course of a couple days. Lots of people, like yourself, have their fingers crossed though.— November 21, 2012 6:17 p.m.
Linda, They Hardly Knew Ye
Pretty true, Refried. (Thanks for the faithful readership and commentary.) I've never, ever had the desire to make my clothng disappear simply by looking into the eyes (and hair) of Fabio. A man's fantasy for sure.— September 1, 2012 11:33 a.m.
Linda, They Hardly Knew Ye
Thanks for kind words. @Joe: Yes, the REAL M.A. Really. Have I ever lied to -- um, well, it's the REAL M.A. You'll see. Take my word for it. (Tried posting this a while ago. It seemed to go uo okay, then disappeared. See?? It's that damn REAL M.A. Revenge sabotaging me. Grrrrrrr.)— August 30, 2012 1:54 p.m.
Flies on Urinals and Their Other Dirty Habits
Hey, Cap'n! I think we have a new sport for the summer Olympics. The Peeathalon? Synchronized Whizzing? Greco-Roman Urination?— August 10, 2012 11:06 a.m.
Beijing Duck, Mumbai Gin, and Other Name Changes
Thank you for the clarification. I hope I warned everyone I couldn't possibly explain all the ins and outs of the details of Mumbai's name history. I came as close as I could, given the histories I was aware of. I've never encountered any reference to Mumbai as Bombay pre-Raj. But since were talking about different linguistic groups and transliterations, perhaps there was some variation of "Mumbai" that sounds like Bombay. Thanks again.— June 27, 2012 5:35 p.m.
Local TV News is Non-News
Yup. The weatherbeing in, say, Mpls-StPaul does a lot of heavy lifting. Winter: ice, blizzards; Spring: floods, big floods; Summer/Fall: thunderstorms, tornadoes. Tho you're right, SD news has much better production values and eye-pleasing anchors. Noticed KNSD's bombshell weatherlady? Actually, I think she's Canadian, which means she's also very nice, eh?— June 13, 2012 7:54 p.m.
