Steve Kowit

Born in Brooklyn in 1938, Steve Kowit was active in the poetry-reading coffee houses of the Lower East Side and studied poetry with Ned O’Gorman at Brooklyn College, Stanley Kunitz at the 92nd Street Y, and with Robert Lowell at the New School for Social Research.

A leader among San Diego poets and editor of the weekly poetry column in the Reader since 2006, passed away in his sleep April 2, 2015. Several local poets paid tribute to him shortly thereafter.

Kowit wrote a story the Reader in 1976 about U.S servicemen trying to get out of the military entitled, "Uncle Sam doesn't love you any more."
