California — Northern

My wife and I drove to San Francisco for a week-long vacation, and this is one of the tourist attractions that we stopped to look at in Golden Gate Park. The statue is called "Cupid's Span" or "Cupid's Arrow."

On a trip to Northern California earlier this year, we drove across the Golden Gate Bridge. On the North East side of the bridge there is a free parking lot from which you can take some wonderful photos of the span of the bridge as well as the city. I walked out onto the bridge and took this photo from directly under the Northern
suspension structure.

The Winchester House in San Jose. Sarah L. Winchester, widow of William Wirt Winchester, began construction on this house after she moved from Connecticut to San Jose in 1884 after she was consumed by depression and grief, caused by the deaths of her infant daughter and her husband. Her husband had been the president of the company that developed and manufactured the Winchester repeating rifle, the gun that was said to have “won the west.” Mrs. Winchester inherited a massive fortune from her husband’s company, but apparently she was plagued by the idea that she and her family were being haunted by the spirits of dead American Indians and Civil War soldiers that had perished due to the Winchester rifles. She came to the conclusion that she was being haunted after consulting a medium to help her deal with her grief. She was supposedly instructed by spirits to build a house, and to never cease its construction.

Meet Big Chuck.

Long time resident of San Francisco’s predominantly black ghetto, Hunters Point, Big Chuck knows what’s up.

Located south-east of the city center and poorly connected to public transport, Hunters Point is a marginalized community that also contains one-third of San Francisco’s toxic waste. A high crime rate and fighting between gangs Big Block and Westmob also contribute to the neighborhood’s spiraling status. It’s amazing to me that such a place can exist within walking distance from San Francisco’s wealthy and white downtown.

This was taken on my way to San Francisco, where I had planned a photography trip. Taking the shot was pretty lucky for me, because I was actually in a moving car, and I was lucky enough to have my camera ready. I only had 1 shot at the photo, so I was pretty happy.
