Fifteen horses seized from their owner by the county Department of Animal Services are being offered up for adoption today (September 15), according to a report from the county.

Beginning last Saturday (September 5) when two horses were taken from an owner in Jamul accused of neglect, animals have been successively removed from the custody of their former caretaker. According to a county news release, "all of them are underweight, and many have other medical issues."

Reported health problems include a need for "veterinary care for their hooves and teeth, and treatment for worms."

Still, the owner was allowed to maintain possession of four horses, deemed to be the healthiest of the neglected stable. Animal services stated that they will make return visits to check on the animals left in the owner's care.

"Potential adopters can visit the horses starting at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the County’s animal care facility located at 5821 Sweetwater Rd. in Bonita," adds the county's release.

The agency is still considering whether to submit charges for abuse and neglect to the district attorney for prosecution.
