Out-of-town guitarists highlight this week in jazz

Tuesday 10
The jazz week begins with visits from two out-of-town guitarists. From NYC, Nir Felder plays Dizzy’s (4275 Mission Bay Drive) with Frank Locrasto and Noah Garabedian, 8:00 p.m., $15 cover… Over at SD City College, Jazz 88 presents Jazz Live with Stanley Jordan doing his two-handed tapping thing. Doors open at 7:30, $10 for general admission, free to Jazz 88 members.

Wednesdays are busy nights for trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos who begins by playing the first set of his Young Lions Series at Croce’s Park West (2760 Fifth Avenue), this week featuring the John Avery Quartet starting at 7:00 p.m. for a $5 cover. Then he’s off to the Seven Grand Whiskey Bar (3054 University) for the Latin jam session with Irving Flores, Rob Thorsen, and Mike Holguin at 9:00 p.m. No cover, musicians bring your horns!

The Jeff Ballard Trio will perform at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library (1008 Wall Street) featuring guitarist Lionel Loueke and saxophonist Miguel Zenon. Start time is 8:00 p.m. $26 general admission, $21 for Athenaeum members, $15 student rush. Make reservations by calling 858-454-5872.

Forget the superstitions, this is a banner day for jazz in the city. The Soda Bar (3615 El Cajon Boulevard) hosts a trifecta with NY free-jazz/electronica trio Dawn of Midi, the Illuminauts, and Nathan Hubbard Passengers starting at 8:30 p.m. $14 tickets… The Joshua White Trio holds court at the Westgate Hotel (1055 Second Avenue) with Dean Hulett on bass and John Reynolds on trumpet, beginning at 8:00 p.m. No cover, but there's a $20 food/drink minimum… There’s a double-header going down at 98 Bottles (2400 Kettner Boulevard) featuring the Matt Smith Neu Jazz Trio with Harley Magsino and Ed Kornauser plus the Jonathan Rowden Group with Ryan Prior, Chris Hon, and James Yoshizawa. 8:00 p.m. $20 at the door… Saxophonist Ian Tordella Trio, with Alex Noice, Ben Wanicur, and Kevin Higuchi touch down at the San Diego Airport Terminal 2 (3225 N. Harbor Drive) from 7:00 to 9:15 p.m free!… The Zinchiladas do that Latin-jazz thing with Alex Lopez, Barry Jaquess, John Cunningham, Melanie Jaquess, and Alberto Diaz at D’lish Bistro (386 E. H Street) from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. Free … The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble with Tim Felten, Bill Caballero, Jesse Aduelo, Kiko Cornejo Jr., Nicholas Costa, Matthew LaBarber, Peter Williams, and Sheryll Felten are hitting the Riviera Supper Club and Turquoise Room (777 University Avenue) at 9:00 p.m. No cover.

Saturday 14
Get an early start by catching the Zinchiladas at the Little Italy Farmers Market (519 West Date Street) from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Free. Come early for prime parking… Head to the Del Mar Fairgrounds (2260 Jimmy Durante Boulevard) for some hot swing with the Gypsy Groove Hot Jazz Band from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. Free with fair admission… the Encinitas Library (540 Cornish Drive) hosts a three-fer, featuring Ine Vanoeveren and Elliot Patros (flute & electronics), plus Nathan Hubbard (solo drums) and the Chris Golinski Trio with Drew Ceccato and Tommy Babin, downbeat at 7:00 p.m. $12 at the door … the Joshua White Trio with Doug Walker and Kevin Higuchi dig in at Northern Spirits (1727 W. San Marcos Boulevard) at 7:30 p.m. $ 5 cover.
