Oceanside Homecoming Queen Named Via Helicopter

Fans of Oceanside's El Camino High School football got a surprise at the game on October 14.

During the homecoming celebration's halftime show, as the five queen nominees and their decorated floats were parading around the field in front of the stands, a helicopter began flying overhead. Fans in the stands became a little miffed at the roar of the helicopter, as the announcer was trying to honor each of the floats.

Then, the helicopter began to lower from the sky and hovered low over the field. Out of the helicopter, five cardboard boxes were dropped onto the field, each with the name of one of the queen nominees. Inside the box marked with senior Marissa Baker's name was her crown — she became the newly elected homecoming queen.

The theme of the evening's celebration was “movies,” with each float based on the name of a popular film. When the homecoming ceremonies were over, the helicopter returned with a sign on its side that read “The End.”

Turns out a member of the senior class is taking helicopter flight instruction at the local airport and asked his flight school if they would help pull off the stunt.

“It was pretty awesome,” said El Camino junior Cecelia Noel. “I don't think we can top that next year.”

The Wildcats went on to win their homecoming game, 24-0 against the Fallbrook Warriors.
