And the Lord Said Sell

No matter what obstacles are thrust in front of San Diego massage parlors — police raids, housewife marches, TV documentaries on sin-for-sale — they’re still here with us, flourishing as never before.... “There are so many of them all over the place, it’s like the flu, you know, you get rid of it in one place and it turns up somewhere else.”

One need look no further than the dim little parlor down the street to restore one’s sense of pride in American capitalism.

Miracles are sometimes postponed. In the case of Morris Cerullo’s World Outreach Center — a ten-million dollar religious complex that was to have been built in Mira Mesa — the miracle may have been postponed indefinitely. Cerullo, who founded World Evangelism, Incorporated, in 1959, has apparently given up his dream and sold the land on which he had hoped to build his kingdom. The first phase of construction was to have included a school of ministry and a village for “adult living.” The second phase was to have included a 6000-seat combination worship/cultural center housing three television studios.

Is surf fishing the domain of the little man? Let’s nip this one in the bud. Surf fishing breeds intimacy with fish, the sea, and freedom. The spirit of the game is its refined simplicity. Surf fishermen don’t chum. Nor is there anywhere the bondage of gear that can reduce other anglers to equipmental slavery.

The surf fisherman relies on his eyes and two feet, a rod and reel, and his ability to use them.

“One thing that crystal did for me, though, it helped me stop smoking pot ’cause I was smoking a lot of pot when I was living in L.A. Moved down here and started using the tweak, and I didn’t have a desire to smoke marijuana. The heavy drinkers are still drinking; they never stopped drinking. The alcoholics are still alcoholics. That’s a hell of combination to have.”

I spend a lot of time in public restrooms these days. Almost-three-year-old Rebecca started wearing underwear last month. Our diaper bill plummeted. My time spent in the bathroom skyrocketed.

When we went to the zoo, Rebecca went to the bathroom. When we had dinner at Rubio’s, Rebecca went to the bathroom. When we bought a wedding gift at Bed, Bath & Beyond, Rebecca went to the bathroom. Every time we go to the grocery store, Rebecca insists on going to the bathroom.

According to Islamic tradition, the four reasons a Muslim should learn Arabic are: it’s the language of the Koran, it is the language of the Prophet Mohammed, it is the language in which God will address humanity on the Day of Judgment, and it is the language spoken by the angels in heaven. Given its importance, Arabic comprises about three quarters of the homework students receive when they attend religious school on Saturdays at the big white mosque off Balboa Avenue.

Dennis Rodman is one more has-been on the Freak Show Circuit. One more once-famous person who will do anything, anything, to remain in the public eye and continue to rake in easy money. And make no mistake, dyeing your hair purple, piercing nose and ear and belly, wearing white, floor-length wedding dresses with full-on, trailer-court-whore makeup slopped over your face in order to entice the odd passerby into giving you his money may be humiliating for the 12 hours you’ve dressed in drag, but the money you take home that night is a hell of a lot more than you’ll make in a year’s time stocking produce at the local Vons.
