"We Get 'er Done"

"We Get 'er Done," says singer/guitarist Paul Shaffer of Private Domain. Shaffer and guitarist Jack Butler have played together locally for 27 years (first as Bratz). The two have outlasted every other band and most live venues. Only the Belly Up is still around from the '70s.

"It's not a big deal," says Shaffer. "People now live until their 80s or 90s. If you're good at what you do, you're going to sustain. The sad thing about music is that success seems guaranteed for the youth, and that's kind of a shame because you improve as you get older. I'm a much better singer now than I was in my 20s."

Private Domain (as a duo and a full band) plays covers and originals. Their fifth album, Politics, is due out this year. Once signed to Gold Mountain/A&M, their music has been on three different radio-station compilations of local artists (KGB, 91X, and KROQ).

Shaffer, who spells his name the same way as David Letterman's music director, had a pleasant financial scrape with his namesake. "I once sent Paul a check for his [ASCAP] royalties that were sent to me. He was very appreciative. He invited us to the Letterman show."

Private Domain performs at 9 p.m. tonight (as a duo) and Friday (as a band) at Dick's Last Resort. Saturday, at 7:30 p.m., the band plays at the Barefoot Bar at Paradise Point. Free admission.
