Fritz Lang's cherchez-la-femme thriller, constructed with the grim efficiency of a hangman's noose, though gravely marred by the merciful loophole ending. The filmmaker's follow-up companion piece, Scarlet Street, with the same triumvirate of actors, was not quite so grimly efficient but neither was it so gravely marred. Edward G. Robinson, Joan Bennett, Dan Duryea. (1944) — Duncan Shepherd
