East Coast, West Coast, and In Between: Harry Sternberg
1450 El Prado, San Diego, 92101
Cost: $8
Sternberg spent his first 62 years in New York City, working as an instructor in etching, lithography, and composition at New York’s famed Art Students League.
In 1966 he was given six months to live due to lung damage from working with toxic paints for several decades. He rebelled against this categorical verdict, quit his job, and set up a studio on East Valley Parkway in Escondido. There he proceeded to create his signature portraits and prints for another 35 years, though now adapted to color schemes inspired by the bright California sun. Friday is opening day; the East Coast, West Coast, and In Between exhibit runs through May 8, 2016.
