San Diego New Music Concert
Local performers and American music take center stage in this final concert for the season with San Diego New Music. "Stirring songs for voices and instruments" is a chance to hear San Diego musicians up close and personal, performing lyrical music by contemporary composers, with a little Spanish sensuality thrown in.
Soprano Jessica Aszodi will perform George Crumb’s Madrigals (I & III) with Red Fish Blue Fish’s Steve Solook (percussion) and San Diego Symphony’s Jory Herman (double bass) and Julie Smith Phillips (harp). These songs are settings of poems by the great Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca and are some of Crumb’s best-loved pieces. Smith Phillips will also perform the local premiere of Michael Mauldin’s, Birds in Winter: six preludes for harp.
Another local premiere featured on the program is Andrea Clearfield’s Three Songs for Oboe and Double Bass After Poems by Pablo Neruda. Double bassist Jory Herman will be joined by San Diego Symphony’s principal oboist, Sarah Skuster to perform these instrumental songs. The concert also includes music by American composer Lou Harrison and Scottish composer Thea Musgrave.
