Art of Élan: Reflections on Loss
Exploring aspects such as grief, pain, heartache and woe, and life and death, the third concert of Art of Élan's seventh season offers reflections on loss. Some of history's most powerful works of art have their roots in the pain of death and mourning. Loss has touched all of us in some way; it is part of what defines the human experience.
This concert features two of our time's most eloquent composers contemplating different aspects of death: Anna Clyne's elegiac "Within Her Arms" is a beautifully heartfelt reflection on the life and death of her mother, while David Lang explores the many facets of suffering in "The Little Match Girl Passion," setting the Hans Christian Andersen story to the format of Bach's St. Matthew Passion.
Over the course of four concerts, Art of Élan's seventh season, Reflections, uses music to explore what it means to be human, providing reflections on youth, hope, loss and humanity. Yhis series features unique collaborations, sounds from around the world, and newly commissioned works.
