MARCH 24TH

Palm Sunday is celebrated by Western Christians to mark the entry of Jesus into the city of Jerusalem shortly before his arrest and execution on a charge of heresy, as reported in the Christian Gospels. In many churches on this day, palm leaves are distributed in keeping with the palm fronds laid by his followers at the feet of the donkey upon which Jesus rode into the city on that day. For information regarding Christianity, see January 5th, “Christmas Eve.”

JANUARY 5TH

The Birthday of Guru Gobind Singh is celebrated by Sikhs on the anniversary of the 1666 birth of the poet and warrior whom the faithful hold to have been the tenth and last prophet of God, who completed the Sikh holy book and established it as the eleventh, final and living Sikh Guru (the Guru Granth Sahib), dying on October 7, 1708. Sikhism is a non-anthropomorphic monotheistic religion based upon the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev, whom the faithful hold to have been the first of ten prophets of God (or Gurus [Sanskrit; in English, “Teachers”]) who was born in India in 1469 and died in 1539.

Christmas Eve is celebrated by Armenian Orthodox Christians and is a national holiday in Armenia on the day before Christmas, the celebration of the birth of Jesus. Christianity is a monotheistic religion centered on the life and teachings of Jesus, a 1st century Israelite whom the faithful hold to have been the human incarnation of God and Messiah foretold in early Judeo-Christian religious texts. Orthodox Christianity is practiced in keeping with traditions established by Jesus’ followers Andrew (in Georgia), Bartholomew and Jude (in Armenia), Mark (in Egypt) and Paul (in Greece) while Western Christianity is practiced in keeping with traditions established by Jesus’ follower Peter (who is considered the first Pope of the Roman Catholic Church) in Rome. The Republic of Armenia is a landlocked nation in the South Caucasus region of south-central Eurasia whose capital city is Yerevan, from the name of the Erebuni Fortress around which the city was built in the 8th century BCE.

Twelfth Night is celebrated by many in Europe and of European heritage on the Twelfth Day of Christmas (the eve of the Feast of the Epiphany) in the style of the 16th century comedy “Twelfth Night, Or, What You Will” by William Shakespeare, whose action takes place on Twelfth Night in the Ancient Greek city of Illyria.
