Determined gangster yelled at police as he was led away to prison

Escondido gangster was sentenced in San Diego Superior Court today

Sergio Alejandro Lopez Jr. turned 26-years-old in jail yesterday. This afternoon he was sentenced to 25-years-to-life in prison.

Lopez' criminal career is documented since 2005, the year he turned 18. That year he admitted meth possession and resisting officer, and was released on probation. A week after his release, he beat and stabbed a man who dared to report his car stolen. Although Lopez was sentenced to 4 years prison for that offense, he was soon given another chance.

In April 2006 he was out of custody, and Sergio Alejandro Lopez Jr. took a baseball bat to two persons. He broke bones in their faces while he informed them they didn’t belong on his turf, the “Varrio West Side” of Escondido.

Sergio Alejandro Lopez Jr. has a large tattoo on his neck, WSG for “west side gang,” and his gang name is “Downer,” according to police.

In February 2012 the violent felon had a confrontation with local police. Lopez was accused of threatening his girlfriend with a gun, and shots were fired during a late-night run from police in an Escondido trailer park. Police testified that it was the parolee who fired the shots, but Lopez’ defense attorney suggested it might have been a policeman who fired – since no one was stuck by a bullet, and no spent bullets were recovered that could be examined as evidence.

In October 2012 a jury declared Sergio Alejandro Lopez Jr. guilty of discharging a firearm in a grossly negligent manner, plus misdemeanor resisting arrest.

In court today, Judge Robert Kearney spoke directly to the gangster. “Mister Lopez, you’re still a relatively young man,” the judge said. He advised 26-year-old Lopez that if he chose to take a different path, and improved himself while in prison, he still had the possibility of getting out with “a lot of life in front of you.” Then the judge sentenced Sergio Alejandro Lopez Jr. to 25-years-to-life in prison.

An entire row of seats in the courtroom was occupied by Escondido police officers who came for the sentencing. When Sergio Alejandro Lopez Jr. was being led out of the courtroom by a bailiff, he turned to yell at the officers, “You guys still didn’t get me! Punks!”
